![]() ![]() It wouldn’t have made sense to have had a really strong loco drawgear that yanked the lesser drawgear out of the first wagon of a really heavy train! ![]() Presumably the weighty trains 9Fs were really capable of hauling never materialised before their demise, hence it wouldn’t really have been a problem. I’m now curious if ever a tender became paired with a 9F after being previously paired with something else.was the drawhook supposed to be changed to the stronger type.did it really matter.did anyone bother? I know for a fact that the engine has the smaller Gedge slot hook, but have absolutely no idea what the tender has! I was hoping to have a look at 73129 tomorrow at the Midland Railway, which is still paired with its BR1B it went to Barry with, but with the weather the way it is and more snow forecast overnight, I’ll probably give it a miss this weekend and have a day in the workshop instead. Either way, it’s drawhook was missing, so I adapted one from a Class 37, which just needed shortening a bit and the thread recutting to suit. Hi Bob & Jim, thanks for both your replies.interesting how these things crop up, when you’ve never thought about them much before! If I remember correctly, the tender selected for 92214 ex Barry Scrapyard (BR1G) was that formerly belonging to 92212, as its owner had selected a BR1F from a different engine (maybe 92134 but not sure). ![]() I'll also scan that part of the arrangement drawings that shows the drawhooks, and post the pics. I'll see what other info I can dig up and post it here. The drawhook is itemised on the drawing, but again, the print is so bad it's not possible to read the number.I would guess all others except the BR1 as I haven't found any other tender arrangement drawings in the BR drawing registers. I also have a copy of Tender Frames Arrangement SL/DE/21629, which has the drawhook in a slot, the same as the BR1 tender, however, the printing of the titlebox in the bottom right corner is so bitty, the writing is illegible so I can't say what tenders it applies to. The frames arrangement for the BR1G tender (SL/DE/21539) also applies to the BR1B, BR1C, and BR1F and no others, according to the drawing. Incidentally, Doug Hewson's drawhooks are the small version.ĭon, I've got an original copy of the GA for the BR1 tender and the drawhook on that one has the couplings connected to it in a slot rather than the hole in the 9F drawhook. it would be interesting to compare it to the Brit drawing. I only have the drawhook drawing for the 9F. There was the same arrangement on the loco drawhook, but behind the front bufferbeam there were a couple of beams and then the rubber and steel spring, the length of which was quite a bit shoter than for the tender. The hind dragbox on the B1G tender was quite deep and the shank had to go through that and then have a combination of rubber sheets and steel sheets to act as a spring, and then the lock nut and a split pin to stop it unscrewing. The distance behind the loco bufferbeam to the lock nut was shorter than for the tender. The only difference on the drawhooks used on Evening Star, was the length of the shank. It would be interesting to see how they compare. What is the number of the drawing you have of the drawhook. ![]() I have 6 different reference books concerning the “Standards” and as most of the photos in them were naturally taken by enthusiasts, photos of the rear ends of tenders are rare! Frustratingly, the few photos that there are, don’t show the drawhook, or are too indistinct.Īs with many things, modern day preserved locos are not necessarily how they were in steam days, so I was hoping you may have the info! My query is therefore (just out of curiosity), what type of drawhook was fitted to the same types of tenders that 9Fs had, but were coupled to other types of engine? that the drawhook fitted to the 9F was bigger than that fitted to the other Standards and photos I have seen in several books bear this out, although as always, you can find the odd exception.ie a 9F with the “wrong” hook! You also mentioned somewhere, but I can’t remember where, that the 9F tenders had the same hook, but with a different length shank, to accommodate different arrangements behind the respective buffer beams. Hi Bob, I was wondering if you could answer a query I have concerning drawhooks? You explained in your posting/photos of your own drawhooks etc. ![]()
